The head of Siemens Energy’s UK operations, Darren Davidson, has expressed concerns about the slow pace of building offshore wind farms in the country. He believes the current approach won’t achieve the government’s target of 50 gigawatts of offshore wind power.

Davidson, representing a company employing thousands in the UK, including over 750 at its Hull factory, emphasized the need for faster progress. He called for collaboration with the government and customers to develop effective plans, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

“We need to improve from a speed perspective,” he stated, expressing doubt about reaching the 50-gigawatt target at the current pace. “It’s crucial that we acknowledge this and push for change.”

Despite being home to the world’s largest offshore wind farm (Hornsea) and witnessing a significant decline in carbon emissions from electricity generation, the UK is facing criticism for its slow progress. The government’s independent advisors, the Climate Change Committee, have labeled recent developments as “worryingly slow” and expressed reduced confidence in achieving the country’s carbon emission reduction goals.

While the government maintains a “clear strategy” backed by significant investments and boasts a leading renewables sector, concerns remain regarding the speed of development needed to meet the UK’s net-zero target by 2050.
